We mentioned earlier that Sydney Pollack's documentary about Frank Gehry was shown at Toronto's International Festival of Films on Art. Well, the wait is over. Sony Pictures Classics has released the film in the US. It made an unofficial debut to a packed house at the Tribeca Film Festival last weekend. The film will open in New York this Friday and in Los Angeles on May 17th (dates for other cities to come).
Here's a bit about Sketches of Frank Gehry from the film's press release:
Beginning with Gehry's own original sketches for each major project, the film explores Gehry's process of turning these abstract drawings, first into tagible, three-dimensional models, often made simply of cardboard and scotch tape, then into finished buildings of titanium and glass, concrete and steel, wood and stone.
As you'll learn in the documentary, drawing is the heart of Gehry's weird architectural process. See more of his sketches in Gehry Draws - which chronicles his creative process through 32 projects (both built and unbuilt).
