In memoriam: Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa and Alfred Kahn

Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, retired Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee passed away on December 18 at the age of 70 after suffering a heart attack in Rome.  He was the author of The Euro and Its Central Bank.  He has been called the “intellectual impetus” behind the euro and the “founding father” of the currency.  He is survived by his wife and three children.

 

Alfred Kahn, retired Cornell University economist died December 27 at the age of 93 at his home in Ithaca, NY.  He was best known as a promoter of deregulation for the airline industry.  He served as Advisory to the President on Inflation to Jimmy Carter and was dubbed Carter’s “inflation czar”.  His landmark two-volume publication The Economics of Regulation was first published in 1970.  He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and a nephew for whom he and his wife were legal guardians.
