Even while apartheid “took a backseat,” was there a sense of unease that it would suddenly flare up again? What were your experiences and feelings during this time?
In a nutshell it was waiting for the shoe to drop. Many students needed conflict in order to mature. If there was no obvious conflict on the horizon, then one would have to be conjured up. Unfortunately, a university is an easy place to conjure up conflict. It is also a relatively unthreatening place to conjure up conflict, compared, say, to the world outside the so-called walls of ivy.
