Thomas Kochan, author of the newly published MIT Press book Restoring the American Dream, was quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article about the recently announced layoffs at GM. 30,000 workers will be laid off and multiple factories will be closed due mainly to GM's competition with Asian car markets.
"No individual company can solve these problems on its own. We're just breaking the social contract again," said Kochan in acknowledging that many large companies are facing a similar problem. "It's not that these employers are mean spirited. They're facing an enormous problem."
Restoring the American Dream offers a plan for how business, labor, government, and workers can come together to make the changes that will allow Americans to benefit from the new economy.
